Och-Ziff Alum Launching Event-Driven Fund
Former Och-Ziff Capital partner Joseph Samuels is starting an equity fund.
Working through a New York firm called Islet Capital, Samuels is aiming to launch the vehicle in the first quarter of 2018. Sources said he already has lined up more than $200 million and still is collecting commitments.
Samuels apparently plans to employ a tactical, event-driven strategy.
He left a high-level equity-trading position at Och-Ziff in July 2016, after 14 years at the $32.3 billion multi-strategy firm. Joining him at Islet is research head James Cappiello, coming off a 10-year run at Och-Ziff.
Also on board is chief operating officer Putnam Coes. Coes most recently served as president of Motley Fool Investment. He became involved with that operation in 2008, initially as a board member, while also working as chief operating officer at Paulson & Co. — where he was employed from 2007 to 2016. He also has worked at Morgan Stanley and Marakon Associates.
